Niagara College athletes shine on the court

Niagara College has named a basketball player from the Bahamas and a volleyball player its athletes of the week.

Van Hutchinson Jr. of Nassau is coming off a season-opening victory at home, in which he led the Knights to victory in their first road game of the season over the Conestoga Condors 91-75 in Kitchener.

The thirdyear guard recorded his second straight double-double, draining 25 points and 12 rebounds. He also found himself one assist shy of a triple-double with nine helpers on the night. Hutchinson also got it done on the defensive side of the floor, chipping in three steals and a pair of blocks.

Hutchinson shot 64.7 per cent from the field and knocked home his only three-point attempt on the night.

Jordan Koslowski, a fourthyear outside hitter, led the Knights to a hard-fought five-set victory over the Conestoga Condors in Kitchener. Koslowski accounted for 35 per cent of the Knights offence, recording 27 points. Her .426 kill percentage led her to the second highest single match point total of her career, just two points shy of her

career high 29 points.

Offensivel­y she recorded 22 kills, three blocks, and two service aces. On the defensive side of the floor, she also chipped in 12 digs.

Women’s soccer

The Knights went 0-2 in their matches at the OCAA championsh­ips.

The Knights dropped a 2-1 decision in the quarter-final against the Durham Lords with Michelle Maecker of Fonthill scoring their only goal.

In the consolatio­n semifinal. Algonquin defeated Niagara 3-1.

Men’s soccer

Niagara 0-2 at the OCAA Championsh­ip with a 7-1 loss to Humber in the quarterfin­al and a 4-0 loss to University of Toronto Mississaug­a in the consolatio­n semifinal. Entering the OCAA Championsh­ip with high hopes, the Knights struggled and came home empty-handed after a pair of losses. Oti Frigole scored Niagara’s goal.

Women’s basketball

In their first road game of the season, the Knights dropped a 57-38 decision to the Conestoga Condors. Hannah Baker of Thorold was the leading scorer for the Knights, recording 10 points in the loss.

Men’s basketball

Livingston Bromwell of Nassau, Bahamas, recorded a double-double putting home 16 points and bringing down 11 rebounds.

Women’s volleyball

After winning the first two sets, the Knights hung on for a hard-fought 3-2 (25-17, 25-20, 24-26, 21-25, 15-12) road victory over the Conestoga Condors. Knights rookie Olivia Burnie of Orillia converted 24 total attack attempts into 12 kills. She finished with 14 points.

Men’s volleyball

The Knights came out on the wrong side of a tough five-set, 3-2 (28-26, 21-25, 22-25, 25-22, 12-15) loss to the Conestoga Condors. Second-year outside hitter Jaydon Milne of Toronto registered 16 kills and 18 digs. The Knights attacker is averaging 3.00 kills per set.

Cross-country

The Knights competed in the 2018 OCAA Cross-Country Championsh­ip, hosted by Centennial College. The Knights men’s team finished in 15th place with David Ahong (31:59) in 57th; Peter Van Den Bos (32:06) in 58th, Janik Luehrs (32:33) 63rd, Malachi Clark (33:24) 78th, Josh Turner (33:59) 80th and Chris Vonlanthen (34:30) 85th.

Shannon Rotteveel, the only female running for the Knights in the women’s race, finished in 67th with a time of 31:23.
