Canucks clip Falcons in overtime

Justin Randhawa’s goal 1:26 into overtime gave the visiting Niagara Falls Canucks a 4-3 victory over the St. Catharines Falcons in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action Tuesday night.

Patrick McKay, Justin Kyle and Mitch Mendonca scored in regulation for the Canucks, who improved to 3-0 to the season series versus St. Catharines and to 14-1 overall.

Andrew Somerville, on the power play, Joseph Colasurdo and Carson Edwardson found the back of the net for the Falcons in the team’s first loss in 10 games.

The setback before an announced crowd of 565 at Jack Gatecliff Arena dropped St. Catharines to 10-3-0-1 in league play. Shots on net were 30 a side.

St. Catharines native Zach Moore, who started his junior B career with the Falcons, earned the victory between the pipes for the Canucks. His record in league play improved to 10-1 with the

win.

Jack McGovern, the Mississaug­a Steelheads’ second-round pick and the 28th selection overall in this year’s Ontario Hockey League, was tagged with his first loss after a 6-0 start to his junior B career with the Falcons. Niagara Falls went 0-for-3 on the power play; the Falcons, 1-for-6.

Niagara Falls opened the regional rivalry with 6-3 and 6-1 victories in a home-and-home series that opened the regular season in mid-September.

St. Catharines hadn’t lost in more than a month coming into Tuesday night’s game. The team’s last loss was Sept. 24 when they were doubled 4-2 on the road by the Hamilton Kilty B’s.

With the consolatio­n point, the Falcons moved into tie with the Pelham Panthers, 10-6-0-1, for third place in the nine-team Golden Horseshoe Conference. Both have 21 points but St. Catharines has a better winning percentage, .750 to .618, and has three games in hand on Pelham.

Up next for the Canucks is a 7 p.m. faceoff Friday at Gale Centre against the visiting Panthers.

St. Catharines is home to the Thorold Blackhawks at the same time.

Niagara Falls is 1-0 against Pelham and St. Catharines is 1-0 versus Thorold so far this season.

Wednesday night action in the Golden Horseshoe had the Hamilton Kilty B’s, 11-4, visiting western New York for a 7 p.m. faceoff against the Lockport Regals, 1-13.
