Port High runners headed to OFSAA

-

Port Colborne High School’s midget boys cross country team is on the road to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) finals in Dundas this weekend to compete against top teams in the province.

The team qualified for the event by first winning the Zone 3 meet and then finishing third at the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association championship despite not having one of the top runners in the lineup.

“I have been very fortunate to have such a strong and dedicated group of runners come out for the team this year,” head coah Scott Vanderlee said.

“Every race they have achieved better results than the last, and I expect nothing less as we go into our final race of the season.”

He said the OFSAA Championship is a major achievement for the school’s program as Port High has been working hard to develop the mindset of excellence.

Mike Smith, the 2018 championship convener, said the course is going to be flatter than runners used to.

“The race ends with a slight hill with 300 metres to go,” he said.

“So, when you’re kicking for home, be sure to save a little extra for that final incline.”

All members of the team will be required to run the four-kilometre course and the top four finishers will be used for the team event.
