Brock's Aidan Buis, with the ball, is defended by Guelph in university men's field lacrosse. Brock dropped a 79-73 decision to the visiting McMaster Marauders for their first loss of the men’s university basketball season.

“We didn’t match their energy to start the game, and they got after the ball defensively,” head coach Madhav Trivedi said after the Badgers fell to 2-1. “From there we played catchup and couldn’t really break into single digits until late fourth quarter.”

McMaster jumped out to a 27-9 lead in the first quarter.

Cassidy Ryan led the way for Brock with 20 points. Tyler Brown collected 13 points while Daniel Cayer and Johneil Simpson netted 12 and 10 points, respectively.

McMaster out-rebounded the Badgers 47-42.

Brock also fell short to the Marauders in the women’s game suffering an 81-62 setback.

Melissa Tatti had 15 points and Courtney McPherson 16 rebounds for the Badgers.

Brock fell to 0-3 despite winning the battle of the boards 56-44 in Friday night’s game at Bob Davis Gymnasium.

“I think it was a learning experience for us as a team,” said Tatti. “They are a strong fifth-year team and top four in the country, we kept up with them for the most part.

“Our one goal was to make them beat us not to lose the game our-

selves and I think we did that.”

Kristin Gallant and Meagan Charbonneau added 14 and 10 points, respectively, for Brock.

Prior to tipoff of the men’s game, the university honoured former Badger Jason Pearson, a student-athlete who lost his life in 2001. The Jason Pearson Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Ryan.

This award is presented annually to a member of the men’s basketball team.

This weekend has the Badgers playing the Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday night and the Nipissing Lakers the following night.

Brock University received two

major awards and won three bronze medals from the Canadian University Rowing Championships on their home course Sunday.

Coxswain Laura Court was named the national outstanding female athlete and head coach Peter Somerwil was given the President’s Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the sport of rowing.

“The reason I do this is because I’m passionate about the rowing,” Somerwil said.

“I want others to have the same great experiences I’ve had in this sport, I want to give people the opportunity to excel.”

Court was the first coxswain to win Ontario University Athletics (OUA) rowing’s female athlete of the year.

“Laura is well-organized. That girl is so intelligent, so smart,” Badgers rowing coach Ron (Swede) Burak said.

“She is worth four or five seconds in a boat alone, just her as a coxie. She’s worth that. She’s worth gold.”

Last summer, she won a gold

medal at the under-23 world championships as coxie of the women’s eight and coxed the PR3 coxed four at the senior world championships.

At nationals on the weekend, the Badgers collected three bronze medals as the women’s eight, the men’s lightweight double and men’s lightweight four with coxswain each placed third in their finals.

Three Brock women’s soccer players — goalkeeper Marilena Spagnolo, midfielder Brianne Desa, forward Samantha (Sam) Bayer — were each named second-team OUA all-stars.

Spagnolo, a third-year kinesiology student from St. Catharines, was the sole Brock all-star last season.

This year, she allowed a 0.95 goals against average and finished third overall in save percentage (.877).

Desa had an immediate impact for the Badgers with two goals against Laurier in her OUA debut.

“She went from strength to strength as the season progressed and ended up as our top goalscorer with five goals,” head coach Kevin Trethowan said.

Bayer, the Badgers’ rookie of the year in 2017, carried last year’s form into this season.

She scored four goals, including the game-winner that clinched a playoff berth for Brock.
