Minor atoms enjoy four-point weekend

Kaleb Bello earned the shutout, Austin Bovine scored four goals and the Welland Youngs Insurance Tigers wrapped up a winning weekend in minor atom league play with a 4-0 road win over Fort Erie.

Maxx Pals, with a hat trick, Kalen Sumbler and Cade Bovine found the back of the net the day before in a 5-1 defeat of Glanbrook.

Novices go undefeated for gold medal

Mackenzie Welychka scored one goal in regulation and another in a four-round shutout as the Welland Mike Knapp Ford Tigers eclipsed the Amherstbur­g Stars 2-1 to win the novice championsh­ip at the Peter Mancuso Memorial Tournament in Niagara Falls.

Dylan Wood and Ethan Rousseau also tallied for the Tigers in the shootout, and Jackson MacLeod was between the pipes for the win. MacLeod backstoppe­d Welland to a 13-0 victory over Burlington in the tournament opener. Welychka, with four; Wood, three; Sebastien Boucher, Ethan Rousseau, two apiece; Noah Rousseau and Hudak were the goal scorers.

Brady Matte recorded the shutout and Jordan Hotham, Ethan Rousseau, Welychka and Wood each scored twice in an 8-0 defeat of Alliston.

Welychka scored two goals, Noah Rousseau and Hudak one each in a 4-1 win over Willowdale, and the Tigers advanced to the final by skating past Whitby 4-1 thanks to goals from Liam Seguin, two; Hudak and Welychka.

Comeback win improves Tigers to 5-3

Skate Sharpening Tigers came from behind to beat Niagara-onthe-Lake 5-3.

Brennen Hagar and Ashlyn Armstrong rounded out the scoring for the Tigers who improved their major atom record to 5-3.

Welland is in Orillia this weekend competing in the Jim Wilson Chevrolet Winter Classic.

Peewees hold on for a tie on the road

A two-goal lead with 11 minutes left in the game wasn’t enough to send the Welland Telus Tigers into the win column when they played Lincoln in major peewee A action Monday in Beamsville.

Carter Kipp and Nicolas DiPietro scored for Welland, now 4-2-3 in league play and set to host Niagara-on-Lake Wednesday night.
