As construction continues on a new five-storey, 130-unit retirement home residence behind Welland Community Wellness Complex, Ward 4 Tony DiMarco wants to know what’s going on with parking at the facility.

“I’ve had phone calls from people in regards to the condition of the parking lot at the Wellness Complex,” DiMarco said.

The parking lot for the complex was to the south side of the building but was sold to the developer in exchange for land and a new parking lot on the east side.

“I know it’s a major development there but wasn’t there a better way we could have handled this? The snow is coming and the lot is full of potholes … someone may be injured there,” the councillor said.

Welland Mayor Frank Campion said council did get somewhat of a report on the construction and parking lot and the city is aware of issues there.

“It is a construction zone and we are doing everything we can to mitigate that,” said Campion.

The mayor said the city is hoping the parking lot will be paved soon but added it’s weather-dependent.

Welland’s chief financial officer Steve Zorbas said there have been meetings with the developer and staff do daily reviews of the site.

Zorbas said the east parking lot should be paved by December 21.

In response to another question by DiMarco, Zorbas said a side door entrance to the complex has been deemed not feasible to use for patrons.

He said there were some liability and safety issues around use of the door.
