Meteors sweep B’s in unusual twin bill

Evan Miller’s goal 18 seconds into overtime completed a hat trick and gave the Fort Erie Meteors a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the visiting Hamilton Kilty B’s.

Brady Lee scored on the power play with 2:13 remaining in regulation for host Fort Erie in Saturday night Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Leisureple­x.

Fort Erie slammed the brakes on a six-game losing slid and improved to 6-16-0-1 in the junior B loop’s Golden Horseshoe Conference despite being outshot 51-24.

Jacob Hearne was a standout between the pipes for the Meteors with 48 saves.

T.J. Hughes, Marino Moro, on the power play; Cullen Ferguson replied for the Kilty B’s who jumped out a 2-0 lead.

Hamilton fell to 2-1-0-1 in headto-play versus Fort Erie and to 14-7-0-1 overall.

Both teams went 1-for-6 on the power play.

Before the regularly scheduled game, the final four seconds of a game suspended Oct. 20 were played with the Meteors emerging with a 1-0 victory. Alex McAteer scored, Hearne made 42 saves for the shutout.

A widespread power outage caused by high winds plunged the Leisureple­x into darkness as a

faceoff was about to take place in the Kilty B’s end.

Fort visits the Lockport Regals, 3-16-1; 7 p.m. Wednesday in western New York. Hamilton hosts the Niagara Falls Canucks, 20-2-0-1; in a 7p.m. puck drop Monday at Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena.

Canucks 6, Regals 2

At Lockport, N.Y., Justin Kyle had two goals and an assist as visiting Niagara Falls won its sixth in a row.

Also scoring for the Canucks were Eric Becker, Andrew Bruno, Garrett Downie, Patrick McCabe.

Tim Lopez, Luke MacLeod scored for the Regals who allowed five answered goals after going up 2-1 early in the second period.

Niagara Falls outshot Lockport 56-36 and went 0-for-2 on the power play. The Regals were 0-for-5 with a man advantage.

It was the second win in as many nights for the Canucks. Kyle, with two; David D’Agostino, Ben Evans, Mitch Mendonca scored in 5-1 victory on home ice over the Pelham Panthers.

Noah Caperchion­e opened the scoring with a shorthande­d goal for the Panthers, 13-9-0-1.

Falcons 10, Jr. Canadians 0

At St. Catharines, Christian Girhiny continues to see more than their red, white and blue uniforms when his Falcons play Welland.

The Thorold native and former Erie Otter sees a teammate in scoring position, if he doesn’t find the back of the net himself. Since joining the St. Catharines lineup in late October, Girhiny has scored eight of his 12 goals against the Jr. Canadians.

Friday night was more of the same. He netted two goals and added an assist as Falcons blanked Welland for their sixth win a row.

St. Catharines, which earned at least a point for the 16th consecutiv­e game, outshot the Jr. Canadians 36-14. Carson Edwardson, Jacob Roach, with two goals each; Noah Blakely, Xavier Drummond, Andrew Somerville, Kyle West rounded out the scoring for Falcons. Jack McGovern earned his second shutout of the season, lowering his goals-against average to 1.91 and increasing his save percentage to .916 in the process.

St. Catharines finished the game 1-for-7 on the power play and also scored two shorthande­d goals. The Jr. Canadians went 0-for-7 with a man advantage.

Welland’s sixth loss in a row dropped — and fourth of the season to the Falcons — dropped the team’s record to 5-15-0-1.
