Welland junior B’s stop six-game slide

Chase Johnson netted a hat trick, Cody Wall scored twice, and Alex Vendette made 31 saves backstoppi­ng the Welland Jr. Canadians back into the win column for the first time in seven games.

Philippe Angervil, Matt Baumann also found the back of the net for the Jr. Canadians in a 7-2 victory over the visiting Lockport Regals in Sunday night Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action.

Welland improved to 6-15-0-1 and moved ahead of the Fort Erie Meteors, 6-16-0-1; for sixth place in the Golden Horseshoe Conference based on winning percentage.

Both have 13 points but the Jr. Canadians have a game in hand.

A.J. Marinelli accounted for the Lockport offence as the Regals, 3-17-1; lost their third in a row.

Welland outshot the visitors from western New York 37-33 and jumped out to a 5-0 lead.

The Jr. Canadians went 1-for-6 on the power play and scored a shorthande­d goal.

Lockport was 0-for-8 with a man advantage.

Welland avenged a 5-4 loss in double overtime to the Regals in

the last meeting between the two junior B teams.

Lockport hosts Fort Erie 7 p.m. Wednesday, while the Jr. Canadians are at the Thorold Blackhawks, 9-11-1; for a 7:07 p.m. puck drop the following day.

Blackhawks 3, Panthers 1

At Pelham, visiting Thorold won its second in a row and even its season series with the Blackhawks at two wins a piece.

Brendan Charlton, Blair Jenkins, on the power play; Owen Allan, on the power play, into an empty net; netted goals for Thorold.

Thomas Young scored for the Panthers, 13-10-0-1.

Shots on net were 33-26 Thorold.

The ’Hawks finished Sunday’s game 2-for-7 on the power play; Pelham, 0-for-3.

Next action for the Panthers is 7 p.m. Friday versus the St. Catharines Falcons, 16-3-0-1; at Jack Gatecliff Arena.

Lone Golden Horseshoe action Monday night has the Hamilton Kilty B’s, 14-7-0-1; hosting the Niagara Falls Canucks, 20-2-0-1; at Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena.

Huskies Jr. Blues 5, RiverHawks 4

At Gale Centre in Niagara Falls, visiting Hamilton scored three answered goals and edged Niagara for the second time in a week.

Dante Massi, Karl Lavoie, on the power play; Tyler Seguin, Daniel Volpatti, power play; scored for the hosts in Saturday’s Provincial Junior Hockey League game on Minor Hockey Night at Gale Centre.

Niagara, 11-9-0-2; was outshot 49-32.

Hamilton improved to 10-11-1 and went 1-for-5 with a man advantage. The RiverHawks were 2-for-5 on the power play.

Niagara hosts the Port Dover Sailors, 7-12-2-2; Thursday at Gale Centre. Faceoff is 7:30 p.m.
