Jailed man to get weekend off for wedding

-

Two Niagara Falls men were sentenced to 90 days in jail, to be served on weekends, but one of them was given a reprieve for one weekend as he’s getting married.

Jody Roberts, 38, and Gary Knight, 26, pleaded guilty in Ontario Court of Justice in St. Catharines Wednesday to several drug-trafficking offences.

Judge Joseph De Filippis imposed a sentence of 90 days behind bars, to be served on weekends. Knight will have a gap in his weekend sentence in March so he can attend his wedding.

After the custodial sentence is served, the pair will be placed on a six-month conditional sentence, the first two months of which will be under house arrest.

In April 2017, Niagara Regional Police carried out a series of raids in Niagara Falls, Welland and St. Catharines following an investigation into drug trafficking.

“The drugs cause misery for the addicts and cause those who love the addicts to suffer,” the judge told the defendants.

“You cause real harm to your friends, your neighbours and the community in which you live.”

According to a news release issued by police following the raids, four people were arrested after seven search warrants were executed. All told, $150,000 worth of drugs, including cocaine, marijuana and shatter, was seized.
