Atlas Steels reunion hoping to draw big crowds

Plant employed thousands of workers throughout its history

The people, that’s who Gloria Richard misses the most from her days at Atlas Steels.

“We used to have a lot of fun there. It was a good company to work for,” said Richard, of the steel giant that was based in Welland.

She’s hoping to see some of her former colleagues at the second Atlas Steels reunion on Sunday, Sept. 8 on the grounds of Welland County Motorcycle Club.

“I worked there for 30 years and I was there when the last truck went out.”

Richard said she worked in a few departments at the steel company but finished up in the traffic department, dealing with customers, setting up loads and getting customs papers ready for drivers.

She said the first reunion was held in 2017 and saw a couple hundred former employees attend.

“We’re hoping to get at least that many people or more.”

The reunion was moved to the motorcycle club, 603 Netherby Rd., because it provides more space.

“We didn’t have enough for all the people at our last venue.”

The reunion will feature a pig roast and there are options for people to buy other items from the motorcycle club.

“It will be a chance to catch up with other former employees, talk about the past and Atlas and just have a good time.”

Richard, a member of the reunion committee, said the reunion gets underway at 3 p.m. and the cost is $10 per person.

“It’s rain or shine and we’re hoping to spread the word.”
