Webinar focuses on COVID-19’s impact on sports
Status of membership dues, registration fees, sponsorships to be addressed in online event
A recently retired Brock University professor is returning to the front of the classroom.
Actually, Hilary Findlay will be in front of a computer when she hosts a free webinar Thursday for sports and recreation organizations affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Set to begin at 2 p.m., the 60minute session is being presented by the Brock University
Centre for Sport Capacity. In addition to giving the presentation, Findlay, who specialized in risk management, regulatory issues and contracts as an associate professor of sport management, will field questions.
The legalities of contracts, such as membership dues, registration fees and sponsorships, will be discussed, as will risk management and the health and welfare of athletes, coaches, staff and fans. Participants will also learn about running virtual annual general meetings during this “unprecedented situation,” dealing with employment matters and rental agreements.
People interested in taking part are encouraged to preregister at https:// bit.ly/2zxdvTc by noon Wednesday. They can use the same link to submit questions.
The questions and answers will be posted on the Centre for Sport Capacity website (brocku.ca/applied-health-sciences/centre-for-sport-capacity) after the event, along with the webinar.
The webinar will be presented on the Microsoft Teams platform.
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in sports being shut down throughout the world and has many professional leagues considering contingency plans such as playing games without spectators.
Except for women’s volleyball, varsity sports at Brock had all wrapped up by the time U SPORTS began cancelling events.
The Badgers were about to open the national women’s volleyball championships in Calgary.
Brock’s 2019-20 sports gala was conducted March 25. In all, 12 awards — including female athlete of the year Hannah Taylor, male athlete of the year Clayton Pye and coach of the year Mike Rao — were presented in the livestreamed event.
