Speeding high-end cars pose danger

-

Re: Niagara police unsure if sports cars part of another organized cruise, April 20

It seems to me the vehicles referred to took part in an organized event and are not merely sports cars. They are expensive high-end performance vehicles capable of speeds up to 200 m.p.h.

I write because a year ago, as I was looking out my dining room window, a car whizzed by at a speed so fast it was almost impossible to make it out. I thought nothing of it. Some idiot is always doing that on Concession 2 in Niagara-on-the-Lake, probably because there are no stop signs.

Seconds later, another flashed by, then a third, fourth, fifth and sixth. I could identify a few as Porches, one may have been a BMW.

I called Niagara Regional Police. Later in the day I saw two of the cars still doing very high speed runs wherever they found open stretches of either the lines or the concessions.

My point is, this goes on all the time and is the precursor to a major disaster at some point, given the already dangerous situation at some spots in the Niagara Peninsula.

The other aspect is there is an increasing bicycle-touring phenomenon (curtailed for the moment) on the roads of the winery areas. These have as much right to the road as do vehicles. They do, however, create a potential hazard with impatient drivers passing cycling groups in the oncoming lane, and if this includes high speed “rogue” drivers of “sports” cars, we have a dangerous mix.
