It’s irresponsible to ignore the future economic woes
Re: Editorial: Municipalities need more help, soon, June 2
It appears the editorial writer is a true believer in kicking the can down the road, pretty much like all our politicians and their municipal staff. Pity help future generations.
The following are the final quotes in the editorial and directly conflict each other.
“It’s not sustainable for Ottawa to continue to hand out money at this rate, obviously. At some point there will be a reckoning. That’s a problem for another day.
“Right now, municipalities need more help, and soon …”
This editorial can see nothing wrong with municipalities, who are running out of their own taxpayers’ money, seeking more taxpayer money from the provincial and federal governments.
Whilst it is impossible to ignore the appalling effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the politicians rush to spend billions of dollars they do not have in response, it is irresponsible to ignore the economic woes it will bring to future generations, some who are not yet even born.
Many of our current politicians, and practically all their staffs, are obviously cushioned in their own insular, economic worlds, where there are truly “money trees” on every corner for their exclusive use.
It would be nice to find at least one independent news outlet that actually reported on the real world.
That “problem for another day” deserves far more than just an empty platitude. Andrew Watts Wainfleet
