Be Prepared in 3 Simple Steps:

1 Know the Risks & Region

Knowing the risks specific to your region can help you prepare yourself better. Are floods likely in your area? Is there a history of tornados, earthquake­s or hurricanes in the region? The internet can help you find this informatio­n. Once you know about the risks in your region, you can start preparing for those specific situations.

2 Make a Plan

Put your plan in writing, it will help your family know what to do in case of emergency. Practise your plan. The plan should include the following elements: emergency exits from your home; an escape route from your neighbourh­ood; a previously identified meeting location; plans for specific risks, such as what do in case of a flood or blackout; emergency contact informatio­n & safety informatio­n i.e. location of the fire extinguish­er and how to turn off the electricit­y or gas, if necessary.

3 Prepare a kit

Water – Have enough to last for three days. Food – Non-perishable items that have a long shelf life and can be easily consumed. Flashlight­s and Batteries Radio – (Hand cranked models are the best). First Aid Kit – Make sure this includes extra prescripti­on medication if needed. Bedding & Clothing A Phone – Include an extra charger. Maps & Important Contact Numbers
