Wellesley posts a win and a loss over the weekend
Still on the road, Jacks victorious in Woodstock before falling in Paris; home fans get first look at team Saturday
IT WAS A SPLIT weekend for the Wellesley Junior C team.
The Applejacks posted a 5-2 win against the Woodstock Navy Vets on Sept. 30, and fell to the Paris Mounties by the same score the next night.
It was a jam-packed third period in Woodstock. There was just one goal scored in the first, off the stick of assistant captain Brenden Goran from Shaun Pickering and Nick Mercier. It wasn’t until the third that the scoring went wild.
Jordon Hoekstra started out for the Jacks, with a goal two minutes in from Jake Wilkinson and Alex Uttley. Wilkinson sunk another puck to the back of the Woodstock net a few minutes later with help from Uttley and Mario Alyas.
Woodstock got themselves on the board with a marker from Justin Elms, but the Jacks quickly answered back from Alyas from Mercier and Goran. Chris Nauts scored Woodstock’s final goal of the game at 19:02 with help from Elms. Goran then scored his second of the game just 10 seconds later from Alyas and Spencer Brick.
“We played a pretty solid game,” said head coach Brad Gerber. “Woodstock is always a tough team, especially at home, but I thought it was a great road win for us. We are quite pleased with how that one turned out.”
Saturday’s game against Paris was a completely different story.
“I am not sure what happened there, but we got exactly what we deserved: a loss,” said Gerber.
The game started on a high note for the Jacks, with a goal from Hoekstra just a couple of minutes into the first with help from Greg Huber and Uttley, but from there, it was downhill.
Paris got two past Wellesley goalie Ryan Hergott. The first from Paris’ Brady Wheelans, and the second from Mitchell Harvey on the powerplay. There was just one goal in the second period, scored by Richard Brooks from Joel Penticost and Griffin Heitshu. Goran put Wellesley up one more on the board with help from Will Martin five minutes into the third, before Paris scored two more. The first from Brett Wilson and the second on the empty net from Mikael Ruffini.
“We didn’t show up. We didn’t have the energy that we had the night before, and it was just one of those games where nothing was really working for us. We didn’t deserve anything better,” said Gerber.
It has been a long road trip for the Applejacks, with eight games on the road before finally heading back to their home arena in Wellesley this coming weekend.
“It is going to be nice,” said Gerber. “It has been quite a few games on the road and I think the guys are excited to be home.”
Before hosting Norwich on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Wellesley will be paying them a visit at their home arena at 7:45 p.m. on Oct. 7.
