Regional police join campaign to help women Sleep Tight

-

WATERLOO REGIONAL POLICE ARE supporting the Sleep Tight campaign to raise awareness about the issue of human trafficking.

“Through our campaign, we’ve collected over 3,000 pairs of pajamas to help send a message of comfort and hope to those who are victims of crimes, misfortune and, in particular, sex crimes,” explains founder Meaghan Martin. “Over that time, though, we have continued to hear more stories about women and young girls who have been held captive as victims of human trafficking. People may think that this doesn’t happen here, but we know that it does and our goal this year is to help shed light on this gut-wrenching issue.”

To do that, Martin and her team will be hosting an evening that combines fun in your pajamas with an opportunity to learn more about the impact of human trafficking in our community.

The Sleep Tight pajama party is scheduled to take place tonight (Nov. 17) at 7 p.m. at Kitchener’s Hacienda Sarria.

“It may sound like an odd combination – a pajama party to face a serious issue,” Martin says. “But, when we come together as a community to enjoy the comfort of our warm pajamas, we can reflect on the circumstances that women and girls who are forced into human trafficking may face. My hope is that it inspires people to do more to help put a stop to it.”

The Sleep Tight campaign runs through a partnership with the Waterloo Regional Police Service. Between Nov. 17 and Dec. 31, donations of women’s pajamas can be dropped off at any Waterloo Regional Police station. Donations will then be distributed to agencies throughout the region.
