EDSS girls’ rugby squad off to a 3-1 start to season

- WHITNEY NEILSON

DESPITE A SMALL TURNOUT this season, Elmira District Secondary School’s girls’ rugby team is finding success in what is a fairly short season.

The regular season only has six games. So far the EDSS team has a record of 3-1, with two games left to play.

“We’ve got a pretty small team this year. Normally we have close to 40 players signed up and this year we have 20 on the roster. And then in addition to that we lost a couple girls right at the start due to injuries,” said coach Matt Bauman.

Heading into their final couple games, Bauman said they were hopeful for a strong finish.

Elmira started the season with a 25-0 win over Huron Heights Secondary School on Apr. 11. Points were scored by Abby Hanley (10), Carly Borutski (5), Sylvia Horst (5) and Mackenzie Martin (5).

Two days later they fell 29-10 to Grand River Collegiate Institute. Hanley and Martin scored for Elmira.

They earned their second win on Apr. 18 versus their rivals Eastwood Collegiate Institute, with a 25-10 finish. EDSS points came from Martin (5), Hanley (5), Horst (5), Bri Costa (5) and Brick (5).

They followed that up with a close 10-5 win over Jacob Hespeler on Apr. 20. Martin and Costa scored for Elmira.

“We’re doing well in the season. The players that are standing out this year would be Mackenzie Martin, Abby Hanley and Abby Brick as well,” Bauman said.

Their next game is today (Apr. 27) versus Galt Collegiate Institute, which will be played at Jacob Hespeler Secondary School at 1:15 p.m.

On May 1 they’ll have their final regular season game against Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute, held at CHCI at 3:15 p.m.

The qualifying round goes May 3, followed by quarter-finals on May 8, semi-finals on May 10 and the championship game on May 15.
