CCAWR award for Gord Davis
Elmira’s Gord Davis is the recipient of 2017 Person of Distinction from the Wider Community, awarded Apr. 29 by the Caribbean Canadian Association of Waterloo Region (CCAWR).
In selecting Davis, the group notes he is well known in the region for his work as a director with KW Musical Productions and the New Hamburg Community Players. He’s also lent his expertise to CCAWR’s production of nine theatrical performances, including the well-received “Once on This Island,” “Ain’t Misbehaving” and “Bubbling Brown Sugar” – productions that gave local performers’ of black and Caribbean heritage the opportunity to perform and tell their stories.
These productions afforded wonderful exposure for the CCAWR and built a Caribbean theatre community that had not existed before, the group notes of his selection.
Also at the gala event held in Cambridge, Chloe Callender was awarded the 2017 Person of Distinction of Caribbean Heritage. She has served the community promoting Caribbean culture and the empowerment of black women both in her professional career as an educator and as a volunteer. She was the co-founder of the K-W Caribbean Association in 1975.
