Revenue Canada scam sees police issue public warning

POLICE ARE ISSUING A warning about what they call the Revenue Canada scam after a 37-year-old Fergus woman was defrauded of more than $4,700.

The victim was contacted by someone claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency requesting payment of back taxes via gift cards. The victim purchased $4,715 worth of cards and provided the activation codes along with her social insurance number.

Police offer the following tips to protect yourself against such scams:

If you think you or someone you know has been a victim of fraud, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or report online at www.antifraudc­entre.ca. If you have lost money due to a fraud, contact police.
