A good day on the diamond for local Catholic school teams
STUDENTS FROM THE REGION’S Catholic elementary schools were out on the diamonds at Waterloo’s RIM Park Monday. The three-pitch tournament was held for juniors (Grades 4, 5 and 6s), bringing out seven girls’ teams and ten boys’ teams to play ball.
The girls played a series of round robin games, while the boys were placed in two divisions to compete.
St. Clement school had a particularly good day, with their girls’ team coming in first, and their boys’ tying for first in the first division. The boys played an extra inning before they ran out of time and had to settle with a tie. In the second boys’ division, Elmira’s St. Teresa took first place outright.
Dan Ingoldsby, principal of St. Clements, says the girls were happy to have won.
“We have very few experienced ball players, so for a lot of girls it was their first time playing, and some of them were even hesitant to come out and play. So they were quite pleasantly surprised.”
The St. Clement boys, meanwhile, were actually split into two teams, one made up of just St. Clement students, and other a mix of St. Clement and St. Agatha, who were shy a few members.
Both teams at St. Clement had been practicing for about three weeks in the run-up to the tournament, but in the end the games were all about having fun.
St. Teresa coach and teacher Nick Rintche said the kids, far from exhausted from the day’s activities, wanted to keep playing even after the tournament had ended.
