ELMIRA HOSTS U19 GIRLS’ PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

- ALI WILSON

ELMIRA GOLF CLUB WAS host to the 2017 Investor Group Ontario Junior Girls’ Championship for the first time.

The annual championship features Ontario’s best amateur female and male golfers age 18 and under.

Elmira’s offer to host the girls’ tournament was accepted by Golf Ontario, to which the club belongs.

Organizers from Golf Ontario say it is a big commitment for a course and its members to host the four-day event and thanked the club, their staff and volunteers for doing so.

London’s Ellie Szeryk claimed the title July 7 after three days of play, topping her win off with setting a course record in her third round.

Elmira had one sole junior boy participating in the 2017 Investors Group Ontario Junior Boys’ Cham-

pionship at The Rock Golf Club in Minnet. Although he didn’t make the cut at the tournament, 15 year-old Isiah Katsube had a good learning experience competing on the toughest course that he has ever played.

Golf Ontario spokesman Darren Matte said although the tournaments cap off the final junior event they host during the year, top players go on to the national championship.

“These junior tournaments are the top level of competition in the province and a stepping stone to Golf Canada’s national championships as players can earn quota spots by competing and placing well in Ontario Championships,” he said. “They are important because they provide the best competition for junior players.”
