Woolwich Youth Soccer house league teams now winding down their season

THE YOUNG MEMBERS OF the Woolwich Youth Soccer Club are steadily winding down their games for the summer after a more or less steady season – inclement weather aside.

“We’ve had a couple of rainouts,” said club vice- president Andrea Richards, but otherwise it’s been another fun season for the house leagues.

And having fun is really the name of the game, especially for the younger players, she said.

“Our littlest guys – 3-6 year-olds – they play against each other. They have kind of a half-hour of practice time and then a half-hour or so of game,” explains Richards. “As game as you can get with a 3- to 6-year-old.

“So very, very basic,” she adds. “Lots of touches on the ball, that kind of thing, just to get them used to using their feet, for sure – and no hands.”

The 7- to 10-year-olds, assumedly aware that soccer is played with the feet and football with the hands, still keep things within the Woolwich Township.

“We do actually have one team that is from St. Clements in our U10 boys that have joined are house league because they are too far from anyone else,” says Richards.

“Then our older kids, the 11- to 16-year-olds, we play with St. Clements, Wellesley and Wilmot, so they are travelling to those four centres, basically.”

The younger house league teams have been playing regularly since May 15, and are due to play their final games starting next week. The older rep teams, like the Wolfpack U13 girls who made it into the Woodstock Tournament finals this year, will continue playing until the end of summer.
