Police out patrolling driver behaviour this weekend

AHEAD OF THE LONG weekend, the Ontario Provincial Police reports there have been 182 fatalities on OPP-patrolled roads so far this year included one or more of the “big four” causal factors in road deaths: inattentiv­e driving, 63 deaths; speeding, 56 deaths; alcohol/drugimpair­ed, 32 deaths; lack of occupant restraint/seat belt use, 31 deaths

In partnershi­p with police services across Canada, the provincial police are conducting Operation Impact over the Thanksgivi­ng

SEPTEMBER 27

4:33 PM | Sometime during the night between September 25 and 26, an unknown person or people set ornaments on fire that belonged to a business on Nafziger Road in Wellesley. The suspects in this arson have not been identified. Anyone with informatio­n is asked to contact long weekend. During the annual campaign, police will conduct enforcemen­t and raise awareness of driving behaviours that that dominate fatality statistics.

Operations Impact is a Canadian Associatio­n of Chiefs of Police (CAPC)-led campaign aimed at maximizing police and other partner resources for safer roads

According to Transport Canada’s last complete year of traffic data, 1,852 people died and 10,280 more were seriously injured on Canadian roads in 2015. the Elmira detachment of the Waterloo Regional Police at 519653-7700, ext. 4320.

SEPTMEBER 28

10:25 PM | An 18-year-old Listowel woman was travelling eastbound on Listowel Road near Arthur Street in Elmira when she struck a large raccoon as it crossed the road. The collision caused significan­t damage to the front of her vehicle but she was not harmed.

OCTOBER 1

3:30 AM | A member of the Wellington County OPP stopped a driver of a Toyota hatchback on Woolwich Street West, in Elora. While speaking with the male driver the officer believed him to be driving while impaired by alcohol. He was arrested and transporte­d to a local OPP detachment for testing. As a result, a 26-year-old Cambridge man was charged with ‘driving with over 80 mgs of alcohol in 100mL of blood,’ as well as ‘impaired driving.’ His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle seized for seven days. He is scheduled to appear in court in Guelph on November 10. 11:32 AM | A 39-year-old Breslau man driving 2009 Hyundai Elantra was eastbound and came to a stop at a stop sign on Menno Street at Fountain Street in Breslau. At the same time, a 76-year-old Mount Forest woman driving a 2014 Ford Escape was heading south on Fountain Street with no stop sign. The Hyundai began to proceed through the intersecti­on and was struck by the Escape. The driver of the Hyundai was charged with ‘failing to yield to traffic on a through highway.’

7:34 PM | An Elmira police officer stopped a local vehicle on Arthur Street South to check the driver’s sobriety. The driver was arrested for drinking and driving but did not have a high enough blood-alcohol content to lay criminal charges. His license was suspended for three days and other charges were laid under the Highway Traffic Act.

7:47 PM | A 49-year-old Plattsvill­e man was driving northbound on Moser Young Road in Wellesley Township when a deer tried to cross the road but was struck by his vehicle, which suffered significan­t damage. The driver was uninjured, however.
