According to the 2016 Census, there were 7,540,830 foreign-born individual­s who came to Canada through the immigratio­n process, representi­ng 21.9% of Canada’s total population. This proportion is close to the 22.3% recorded during the 1921 Census, the highest level since Confederat­ion. In 2016, 7,674,580 individual­s were identified as belonging to a visible minority group. They represente­d more than one-fifth (22.3%) of Canada’s population; 3 in 10 were born in Canada.
