High school curlers head off to face CWOSSA competition
LOCAL TEENS HAVE ROCKED their way straight to the CWOSSA curling championships this week.
After an extremely successful season in both girls’ and boys’ competitions, the curling teams from Elmira District Secondary School headed to central Ontario to fight for their chance to be CWOSSA champs.
Representing the senior boys’ team was Ben Alpaugh, Brian Alpaugh, Jonathan DeGanis and Kyle Henry, while Veronica Bernard, Julia Baxter, Pauline Ditner and Larissa Musselman stepped up for the senior girls’ team.
After a long season the teams put up a good fight, seeing the girls falling in the CWOSSA semi-finals and the boys making the finals of the CWOSAA championship.
Heading into WCSSAA the boys’ team had finished off the regular season in first place, with the girls finishing second.
Both teams played some tough games in their WCSAA bonspiel day.
“We won our first game in the morning and then we went on to play our second games and those ones were nail-biters until the very end – essentially it wasn’t until the last end that we really knew who was going to go. Both of our teams actually lost, so they had to go on and play the third game for the finalist position rather
than the championship,” said Amanda Pileggi, coach of the curling teams.
Because of the combined District 6 and District 11 for WCSAA both the winners and finalists were granted the opportunity to move on to CWOSSA. Sending EDSS on in the runner-up spot.
With eight schools competing, entering into play-downs on Tuesday it turned out the home team, Saugeen District Secondary School was the team to beat, on both ends.
The girls, were at the Southampton Curling Club, where they finished off their Tuesday winning the B1 pool. Wednesday morning they headed to Port Elgin, the team played their last game of the season falling in the semifinals to Saugeen DSS.
The boys, meanwhile, headed to Port Elgin Tuesday, securing themselves a semi-finals position as the B2 pool winner. After defeating Centre Dufferin District High School in the semifinals, the team could proudly call themselves finalists after a tough game against Saugeen DSS.
All in all, both teams have a lot to be proud of successful representing EDSS in the curling world.
