WCS launches new drop-in program for adults, using youth centre facility

FILLING A VOID IN Elmira, Woolwich Community Services has come up with a new offering: Adult Connect.

Currently there are places for youth to gather, as well as seniors. However, if you’re an adult in the middle of those demographics and just interested in finding a place to hang out, your options might be limited.

Organizer Tina Reed, WCS’ coordinator of community support, thought the idea to offer a gather- ing place for adults in the township would fill the void. As a bonus, the program makes use of some underutilized space at the WMC.

Starting April 9, the Woolwich Youth Centre facility will be open to all adults Monday evenings from 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

“When we say all adults, we mean all – from age 19 to 100, all are welcome,” said Reed. “Our vision is to use the space much like the youth centre runs, a respectful inclusive space for all adults, from all walks of life, to connect with others in their community.”

Reed wanted to stress that it really is open to anyone – there is no group, program or service associated with it. Essentially, WCS is offering up a bunch of recreational tools within a furnished space, and would like to see it in use when it otherwise wouldn’t be.

In the beginning, it will be a time to take advantage of what is at the Youth Centre, which includes a shuffleboard table, ping-pong table, a pool table, games, computers to use, video game systems, musical instruments and movies.

“As time goes on the activities will evolve depending on the wishes and ideas of those who attend,” she said, noting those could mean future plans could include information sessions, classes, outings or guest speakers.

Adult Connect is a dropin program starting next week – there’s no need to call ahead or to sign up, just show up and hang out. Reed says she is available to answer any questions about the program by calling 519-669-5139.
