OPP nab violators in two-day blitz of transport trucks

THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE laid a total 697 charges against transport truck drivers and took 63 trucks out of service during their Operation Corridor enforcemen­t initiative June 13-14. In partnershi­p with the Ministry of Transporta­tion, the OPP stopped a total of 1,692 trucks during the 24-hour blitz.

Speeding led the list of offences, with 226 charges being laid. Defective equipment ranked second at 176 charges (see complete list of charges below).

Other charges ranged from unsecured loads to distracted driving, reaffirmin­g the OPP’s commitment to its Commercial Motor Vehicle Collision Mitigation Strategy with the goal of saving lives on Ontario roads.

12:00 AM | A driver entered a RIDE checkpoint in the Township of Perth East where a member of the Perth County OPP formed grounds to suspect that he had consumed alcohol. An approved screening device was used, which registered a fail result. The driver was arrested and transporte­d to an OPP detachment for further testing. As a result, a 42-year-old Huron East man was charged with ‘driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood.’ His vehicle was towed and impounded, and a driver’s licence suspension was imposed. He was to thank the many safe transport truck drivers and other motorists who drove safely and helped keep our roads safe during the campaign.

A passenger car travelling eastbound on Perth Line 37 encountere­d a sport utility vehicle (SUV) as it approached the intersecti­on of Perth Road 108. The SUV made a turn onto Perth Road 108, reportedly cutting off the passenger car. The car left the roadway, colliding with a hydro pole. Emergency responders at the scene transporte­d the vehicle occupants to hospital with minor injuries. The SUV failed to remain at the scene. The SUV has been described as a pearl white, newer model Jeep Cherokee. Perth County OPP are looking to speak with the driver, and are asking anyone with informatio­n to contact police immediatel­y. 9:00 AM | Members of the Wellington County OPP were conducting a RIDE check on Sideroad 4, Inverhaugh. While speaking with the male driver of a grey sedan, officers formed the opinion that he was under the influence of alcohol. A roadside screening test was conducted that resulted in a fail. He was arrested and brought to a local OPP operations centre for further testing, after which the 47-year-old Elora man was charged with ‘driving with over 80 mgs of alcohol in 100mL of blood.’ A 90-day Administra­tive Driver’s Licence Suspension (A.D.L.S.) and seven-day vehicle impoundmen­t were initiated as per statute. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Court on July 10.
