Market crosswalk is long overdue

-

To the Editor, IT’S ABOUT TIME. FINALLY, a crosswalk will be installed at the farmers’ market on Benjamin Road/ Farmer’s Market Road (Observer July 5/18).

I drive a school bus in Kitchener-Waterloo and park in behind the TSC store on Weber Street in Waterloo. If I had a quarter for all of the disrespect that I witness on Thursdays both by pedestrians and vehicles crossing and driving in this area of Waterloo, I’d be so rich! Even with a police officer directing traffic from 8-3 at this location, it’s disgusting and sad to see how aggressive drivers and pedestrians carry on thinking that they own that section of the road and that their time’s more precious than anybody else’s.

People need to slow down and take their time, not pull out or inch up to and beyond the white line because you’re in a hurry. Just because the posted speed limit is 50 km/h in that area, does not mean you have to drive that speed or even faster.

When driving my bus in these hours, I can’t stop on dime, whether loaded or unloaded. I have 40 feet behind me, not to mention precious cargo and thousands of pounds. Look both ways, wait for the police officer to wave you on and, most of all, please respect each other.

This crosswalk’s long overdue and thankfully isn’t being installed because of a fatality occurring but instead in order to prevent one or serious injury.
