JULIE LAWLOR, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, WESTSHORE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

We’ve had some welcome rain and it’s back to school – and side by side with that there is still loads to explore in September in the WestShore.

The Goldstream Station Market at Veterans’ Memorial Park in Langford will be open every Saturday until Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., so come and check out the range of goods that are homemade, handmade, or homegrown.

Just across the road, Party Crashers in Langford can help you decorate and plan not just for seasonal events like Thanksgiving and Halloween, but also for birthdays, weddings and baby showers. Their vision is that “Party Crashers should be a one stop shop for anyone looking to check off their party to-do list and a place they know will provide them with excellent customer service, and be willing to work with the customer.” One of the ways they work with their customers is by being open from 9:30 a.m. – 9 p.m., Monday-Saturday, as well as on Sunday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

While I’ve forbidden my children on pain of losing presents to mention the word “Christmas,” September is a great time to do some advance holiday shopping. Windrush Gallery in Metchosin is open from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Wednesday-Sunday. Just around the corner from

My-Chosen Café, Windrush offers an impressive range of art by an equally impressive range of Vancouver Island artists.

If you’re wanting to extend your summer season by getting out and about in the fresh air there are plenty of options available including the popular Metchosin Days. Also on Sept. 13, Royal Roads University will be hosting the

Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope. Registration and coffee start at 9 a.m., with opening ceremonies scheduled for 9:30 a.m.. You can walk or run a route distance of 2.5 or 5 km, and families are very welcome. Also on Sept. 13 and just down the road,

Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse in Colwood will be holding their 21st Annual English

Car Affair in the Park. Sponsored by the Old English Car Club of B.C., over a hundred classic and vintage British automobiles will be on display. If living history is more your thing, tickets are now on sale for Fort Rodd Hill’s Lantern

Tours. Taking place on Sept. 26, guided tours leave every 15 minutes from 7 p.m. – 9:15 p.m. and will invite you to “experience the sights, sounds and smells of life at Rodd Hill during the period of 1897–1956.”

Until Sept. 30 you have the chance to vote for your favourite spaces and places as the WestShore Chamber of Commerce presents the Best

of the WestShore Awards. The 40 categories range from “Best Hiking Trail” to “Best Second Hand Shopping” and everything in between, so cast your vote by going to www.surveymonkey.com/r/westshore2015. Tickets will be going on sale soon for the Awards Gala, which is planned for the end of October.
