Two-way Pandora bike lane doesn’t make sense
The proposed bike-lane plan Victoria is embarking on is a good idea. As a motorist, I prefer that the cyclists have their own lane and ride single file. I also support those who choose to commute by bicycle.
I find it too scary to ride a bicycle on busy streets. If I were to take up cycling, I would only ride on the trails.
The proposed two-way bike lane on Pandora does not make sense. Pandora is a one-way street and should be that way for all modes of transportation. I have observed that the bike lanes are not only used by cyclists. There are skateboarders, electric mobility scooters, people pushing loaded shopping carts and people in wheelchairs using bike lanes, but mainly cyclists. If you have a two-way bike lane there is the potential for collisions. What then? Install a centre median.
There should be more enforcement of helmet, lights and traffic laws for cyclists. So far, I have managed to brake in time, avoiding cyclists who run stop lights, ignore yield signs and ride in crosswalks. I have been informed by the police that these laws are difficult to enforce, as many cyclists do not carry identification.
A licensing system needs to be put in place identifying owners of bicycles. A lot of tax dollars are being spent on cycling infrastructure. Recently, there was a notice to purchase your 2016 dog licence. Why should cyclists have a free ride? Lorena Green Victoria
