CAROLINA 5 WINNIPEG 3

-

WINNIPEG — The Carolina Hurricanes scored four goals on their first nine shots and held on for a 5-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Friday.

Phillip Giuseppe, Andrej Nestrasil, Jordan Staal and Justin Faulk put the Hurricanes ahead 4-0 by 10:04 of the first period.

Nestrasil added a second goal while Staal and Joakim Nord- strom each had a pair of helpers.

Alexander Burmistrov, Andrew Ladd and Blake Wheeler — with a goal at 13:48 of the third period — had Winnipeg fans switching from jeering to cheering for a huge comeback.

Cam Ward made 33 saves for the Hurricanes (24-21-8).

Staal scored Carolina’s third goal while on the power play, signalling the end of the night for Jets rookie netminder Connor Hellebuyck, who had only faced six shots. Some fans booed him as he left the ice and cheered when Michael Hutchinson was announced as his replacement.

Hutchinson, who hadn’t played since a 4-1 loss in Anaheim on Jan. 3, finished with 21 saves.

The loss wrapped up Winnipeg’s season-long, six-game homestand, which only featured one victory.

The Jets (22-26-3) went into the game in a five-way tie for second last in the NHL.

Winnipeg heads out for a twogame road trip starting in Colorado today. Carolina visits Montreal on Sunday.
