Horth Hill’s varied terrain a treat for nature lovers

-

Discover North Saanich’s Horth Hill Regional Park, just west of the Swartz Bay ferry terminal, at Horth Hill Highlights, a CRD Parks guided walk on Sunday.

Join a CRD Parks naturalist for a hike up the hill to the highest point in North Saanich, 136 metres above sea level.

At the summit, enjoy panoramic views of the Saanich Peninsula, the Gulf Islands and the San Juan Islands.

Bird-watchers will appreciate the abundance of species, from turkey vultures to woodpeckers, hummingbirds and migrating songbirds that pass through the area.

The park’s varied terrain is a treat for nature lovers, from the moisture-loving cedar trees at the base to the drought-adapted plants of the Garry oak meadows at the top. Though it has some narrow passes, the climb is suitable for most people.

The park also boasts wide bridle paths that intersect with the narrower hiking trails, making it a viable option for people with horses.

Please wear sturdy footwear and dress for the weather as programs take place rain or shine. The free hike runs 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday and is recommended for participants eight years and older. Meet at the information kiosk in the parking lot off Tatlow Road. The park is served by B.C. Transit routes #70 and #72. Try to arrive 10 minutes before the start of the program. Please leave pets at home.
