On 4/20, a pot-pourri of marijuana rules
It’s 4/20 today, meaning they’ll shut the windows and air intakes at Victoria City Hall to keep out the clouds wafting over from the annual Centennial Square smoke-in.
No, pot is not legal yet, though yes, that’s coming — but until the law arrives, we’re left with the Wild West. This is the interregnum, the period between the War On Weed and whatever comes next.
Justin Trudeau’s election plat- form included legalization of nonmedical marijuana, but all he has done so far is hand the file to former Toronto police chief Bill Blair, with no deadline for changing the law.
Meanwhile, medical marijuana continues to be a free-for-all, with wildly inconsistent rules that depend on whether your municipality has chosen to regulate, ban or ignore dispensaries.
This is a big deal in Victoria, which pound for pound (or gram for gram) is the Pot Shop Capital of Canada. With 32 dispensaries, we have more per capita than even Vancouver. (Ours is a competitive market: note that one of Victoria’s dispensaries advertised online for “two outgoing, enthusiastic, polite, pretty ladies” to drum up business at today’s 4/20 rally.)
