Writers invited to take part in fiction contest
Local writers have an opportunity to flex their creative muscles and potentially win cash for their efforts.
Canadian Authors — Victoria is presenting a flash-fiction contest, inviting residents of Vancouver Island and nearby Canadian islands to write a story in 250 words or fewer in any fiction genre.
Stories must be original and unpublished, either in print or online, and multiple entries can be submitted.
Payment of a $15 entry fee ($10 if you’re a Canadian Authors Association member) is required for each entry.
First, second and third prizes are $100, $75 and $50, respectively.
Entries must be submitted online as email attachments and should be sent to VICinfo@canadianauthors.org.
Entries should be doublespaced, aligned left and with at least one-inch margins, created in 12-point Times New Roman or Arial font.
Repeat the story title at the top of each page, as well as the word count.
Acceptable file formats are .doc, .docx, .rtf and .pdf.
Since the entries will be blindjudged, do not include your name or other identifiers in the story itself.
Entries will be judged by John Gould, author of Seven Good Reasons Not to Be Good and the Giller-nominated collection Kilter: 55 Fictions.
Write FLASH FICTION CONTEST in the email’s subject line, and include your full name, address, email address, phone number and title of your entry in the body of the email.
Payments can be made using PayPal at canadianauthors.org/ vancouver/victoria, or by cheque, payable to CAA Vancouver.
Cheques should be mailed to CAA 2016 Flash Fiction Contest, c/o Jean Kay, 1052 Jackson Way, Delta, B.C. V4L 1W4.
Include a note stating the author’s name and the story that the cheque is payment for.
All submissions must be made before 11:59 p.m. on July 14.
The contest winners will be announced in the Times Colonist on Aug. 9.
