Choice for art gallery is crystal clear

-

Let’s have a modern art gallery in downtown Victoria. The current Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is a little gem nestled in leafy, suburban Moss Street. Already rich with an impressive collection of Japanese art, it could become a unique expanded showcase and destination for historic and modern art from the Far East.

The Crystal Garden site is perfect for a new spacious art gallery, where today’s art could be shown. We need a bold contemporary design for a gallery that would contrast with Victoria’s architecture (art in itself), exhibits to impress and provoke, reflecting today’s creative ideas from home and abroad, and a coffee shop serving light snacks and pastries. It could be a year-round destination for locals and tourists alike.

Many important cities have such a stimulating and welcome art gallery. With all that glass gleaming in the Crystal Garden, city planners should be able to see the light. Mary-Theresa Smith North Saanich
