Lakers cool off Shamrocks

- MARIO ANNICCHIARICO

The streak is over and the Western Lacrosse Association standings are now that much more cluttered after the host Burnaby Lakers defeated the Victoria Shamrocks 12-10 at Bill Copeland Arena on Friday night.

Victoria’s winning run is snapped at three as the Shamrocks slip to 9-4 in the standings while the Lakers, at 8-6-1, move a point back of the third-place ’Rocks, who do have two games in hand.

New Westminster, at 11-3-2, sits first with 24 points — six up on Victoria, which still has three games in hand. Maple Ridge, at 9-6-1, remains a point up on the Shamrocks, also having played three more games.

Friday’s outing began a halfhour late because of travel issues for the Shamrocks.

“We had a very short warm-up. Our mental game wasn’t there tonight. Too many mistakes,” said head coach Bob Heyes.

Jeff Shattler had three goals and four assists in a losing cause, while Rhys Duch recorded a hat trick. Corey Small, Jon Harnett, Ben McCullough and Myles Kenny also scored. Robert Church had a hat trick and added three assists for the Lakers.
