We need better mental-health support

-

I am concerned about the lack of mentalhealth support in our lovely city. It is apparent that mental-health issues are rising, although there is still a stigma around mental health due to society’s “medicate it and forget about it” approach.

I work in the human-services field, and have family members living with mental illness. I see the lack of support every day, and I think it is time to raise proper awareness.

When we do not properly support or try to help those living with invisible illnesses, we are contributing to the stigma, thus making society afraid of those living with such conditions. There are many individuals in our society living with such conditions, yet not receiving the help they deserve.

The government cutbacks in areas such as mental-health help have a huge impact on our society. As someone who lives with anxiety and depression and does not want to be medicated, I cannot afford to see a psychiatrist or any other helper, which can end up costing an arm and a leg.

These are just some thoughts to take into account the next time we think about spending tons of money on a new bridge, or recreating an old one.

I hope that those reading this letter will think long and hard about this, and make an effort to advocate for those who need the help. Writing a letter to your MLA would be a great start. Caitlin Reid Victoria
