Are you looking for an exceptional high school for your teen? Then start your journey here – at The High School at Vancouver Island University (VIU). Situated on Nanaimo’s VIU campus, The High School offers one of the most caring, personalized and affordable options among independent secondary schools in British Columbia.

Students from B.C. and around the world attend Grades 10 – 12 at The High School, which is celebrating its 20th year. It’s the sole high school in B.C. – and one of only two in Canada – that is directly connected to a university. The result is a singular learning experience for students, who are immersed in university life throughout their stay while benefiting from small classes and individual attention.

Students are exposed to a multitude of options through VIU’s excellent postsecondary programs. As well, qualified High School graduates enjoy direct admission to VIU, where they can continue to pursue their academic careers.

Students at The High School also have access to all of the University’s facilities and resources, including the library, the bookstore, the gym, lecture theatres, science labs and more.

The student experience is also enhanced by The High School’s international approach. About 30 per cent of the school’s student body consists of domestic students, while the remainder come from countries around the globe, including Egypt, Mexico, Brazil, China, Japan, Germany and Ukraine.

This mix presents a range of multicultural opportunities at The High School, where youth are inspired to evaluate and challenge their world views while learning to understand other cultural perspectives.

Domestic and international students also benefit from our family boarding program, which enables pupils to live with a supportive local family while attending The High School.

In addition, students will soon benefit from another great feature. Starting in September 2016, every student will be issued a Chromebook – a small, cloud-based laptop that is affordable and easy to maintain. The High School is proud of its personalized approach to education, and this latest initiative will allow us to further enhance our oneon-one outlook. It’s yet another way that our students can learn effectively and explore their passions and ideas in an innovative environment.

So whether a student loves to read, write and research, is a potential future leader, has a special talent to nurture outside the classroom, or craves the academic, social and emotional support offered by a small, dedicated high school – they can find it all and thrive at The High School at VIU.

Come discover a school where enthusiasm reigns, where every student matters and where academic excellence is encouraged, all within a welcoming, supportive and safe setting. Start your journey here – and discover the world in your own backyard!
