Spot vision problems before classes begin

-

As you relax your way through summer holidays, you may realize it’s almost that time for your child to go back to school again! You’ve got your “To Do” list for making sure you buy new clothes and school supplies, but is an eye exam on your list?

Since 80 per cent of a child’s learning is based on vision, the doctors and staff of busy optometric practice Dr. Joslin, Dr. Morin & Associates encourage adding this valuable checkup to your list to help your child have a successful school year. Often the visual demands of schoolwork can make greater demands on a child’s visual skills, pointing out a vision problem that was not apparent before school. The child may not realize they have a vision problem – they may simply assume everyone sees the way they do.

There are a few signs that may indicate your child needs glasses. For example, squinting the eyes when trying to focus, tilting of the head, rubbing the eyes or covering one eye while reading or watching television may be signs of an uncorrected refractive error and the need for glasses. Should your child experience these symptoms, it is recommended to book an eye exam with a trusted and knowledgeable family Optometrist, such as those at Dr. Joslin, Dr. Morin & Associates who have had the pleasure of helping families with their eye health and optical needs since 1988.

Did you know it is recommended that children’s eyes are checked as early as six months of age? The BC Medical Services Plan offers full eye examination coverage for children 18 years of age and under with an active BC Care Card. Doctors of Optometry can use a variety of tests to help determine if there is any need for glasses or if there are any signs that glasses may be needed in the future. It is especially important for a child to be seen before starting school and yearly afterwards to ensure that they have optimal vision for learning.

Dr. Joslin, Dr. Morin & Associates are located in both Langford and in Sooke. As a comprehensive family practice, they work to accommodate all ages, abilities and occupational needs.
