A new school year begins

- Piet Langstraat Superintendent of Schools

Welcome back to a new school year with all of its excitement and anticipation as approximately 19000 students return to school in the Greater Victoria School District. We look forward to working with parents and the community, our partners in education, in providing world class public education to all of our students. We are fortunate to live in a community that places such high value on education.

We recognize and acknowledge the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations on whose traditional territories we live, we learn and we do our work.We value our relationship with our First Nations partners and look forward to continuing to plan together for the success of our Aboriginal students.

Our District has a record of academic excellence and success for all students. Graduation rates have risen consistently for the past five consecutive years. Our students continue to achieve above average on provincial testing measures.

The Board of Education and staff are dedicated to continuous improvement. This past year the Board developed a strategic plan that clearly outlines the priorities for the school district for the coming years. The five strategic goals for the District are:

• Create a long term plan to enhance learner success

• Address the unique needs and build on the strengths of Aboriginal learners

• Provide greater support for vulnerable students with diverse needs

• Actively engage with our communities

• Strengthen District governance practices

Our exceptional staff of teachers, support staff and administrators are committed to ensuring that each and every student succeeds. Every day staff members go above and beyond to make a difference for students.

The District is deeply committed to creating life chances for students. With the ever-increasing diverse opportunities for students as they leave high school, it is incumbent on us that we provide students with opportunities to explore their curiosities, passions and interests. We continue to explore and create pathways beyond high school for our students. The District provides many academic and trades related dual credit course options and we are committed to continuing to create opportunities for our students.

We are committed to providing a learning and working environment where we treat each other with dignity and respect. We are dedicated to creating schools that are safe and free from discrimination based on race, colour, gender, sexual orientation or any other bias while actively promoting proactive strategies that ensure that all students, employees and families are welcome and included in all aspects of education and school life.

The Greater Victoria School District is proud our students’ successes and accomplishments. We have an incredibly talented staff that works diligently to provide opportunities for all students. We understand that parents are the first teachers of their children and we look forward to working in partnership with you and the entire community to continue to provide world class public education to all of our students.
