Girl’s tragic crash shakes Parksville

-

The death of a four-year-old girl at a Parksville resort has rocked the midIsland city, known for its expansive beaches and outdoor activity.

The child was riding a skateboard at the Paradise Adventure Mini Golf and RV Park while lying on her stomach Wednesday when she lost control and headed toward a slow-moving vehicle in a campground area. She ended up in front of a tire just as the vehicle was pulling off the road to park.

“It’s very, very tragic,” said Parksville Mayor Marc Lefebvre.

“We’re all very much upset by this. In the summertime, a four-year-old, it’s devastating.”

Darrelle Jesperson, a manager at the neighbouring Quality Resort Bayside, said: “Absolute sympathies.”

“It must be absolutely terrible for everyone involved.”

No one contacted at Paradise Adventure Mini Golf and RV Park wished to comment.

The first person at the scene of the incident was a doctor who started CPR.

The girl was then taken by ambulance to Parksville’s weigh station, an open spot where helicopters can land, but she died before she could be put aboard a helicopter and flown to hospital. No charges will be laid in the case. “Because it is an accidental death, it goes to the coroners office,” said Island District RCMP Cpl. Tammy Douglas.

The B.C. Coroners Service is investigating and could release the girl’s identity early next week.
