$3.1M settlement for damaged navy ship
The federal government is receiving $3.1 million in an out-of-court settlement for damage to HMCS Winnipeg after it was hit by an American fishing vessel in 2013.
An agreement on costs was reached in June, a federal official said Tuesday. Canada’s Department of Justice had launched an action in Federal Court against the owner of the American Dynasty fishing vessel to recoup costs to the Halifax-class frigate.
The crash happened in Esquimalt Harbour when the American Dynasty, owned by American Seafoods Co., was being towed to the graving dock for repairs.
The fishing vessel accelerated and it veered starboard, crashing into HMCS Winnipeg, which was tied to a jetty.
A Transportation Safety Board of Canada investigation found that the accident was caused by a chaotic series of failures by the fishing vessel’s crew and onboard equipment. —
