Spend more money on walkers and cyclists
Re: “Bike lanes make emissions worse,” letter, Aug. 19. What our city and province need are more options for transportation than single-occupancy private vehicles.
From the 2011 census, 11.1 per cent of commuters use transit, 10 per cent walk and 5.9 per cent use bicycles. Yet almost our entire road budget is devoted to improving conditions for the portion not represented by these figures. Look no further than the $85 million on one intersection to improve conditions for vehicle movement, without any matching proportionate improvement for the population not covered by this option.
I, for one, am happy to see that the city is doing something to try to make our roads more welcoming to other users. Perhaps with projects like this we can actually meet our carbon-reduction goals. Providing better facilities for single-occupancy vehicles will not. Brian Collier Victoria
