Rams knock off Fighting Irish in high school season opener

-

The defending Subway Bowl triple-A senior boys high school football champion Mount Douglas Rams got off on the right foot Friday, using a 40-yard catchand-run play from quarterback Gideone Kremler to Josh Lucas for the winning score on the final play to defeat Vancouver College 33-28 at Mount Doug.

It was a mild upset as the Rams enter the B.C. High School Football League season ranked No. 4, while the Fighting Irish are No. 1.

“This was a game for the ages and both teams deserve full credit,” said Rams head coach Mark Townsend. “The players from Vancouver College played a terrific game, especially in the second half. Similarly, our kids showed a lot of fortitude and resilience to give themselves one last opportunity.

“The defence came up with a huge stop, then moments later Gideone threw a perfect pass and Josh made a remarkable catch.”

Kremler added two scores along the ground from seven and two yards out and he also connected on a 26-yard major with Lucas to open the scoring. Ben Pierik added a one-yard major.

On the defensive side, Soren Hallschmid led the Rams with seven tackles, followed by Quinn Jenish with six, Tyrese Hogue, Hayden Naylor and Lucas with four each. Phil Grohovac had a fumble recovery and Naylor also had an interception.

Today, Belmont travels to South Delta for a 1:30 p.m. game.
