- WITH FUNG LOY KOK TAOIST TAI CHI® ARTS www.taoist.org

Taoist Tai Chi® arts have their origin in the tradition of Taoist internal alchemy. Alchemy in Taoism is a process of changing and transforming to the original healthy state. This begins with the transformation of the physical body. When the physical body is healthy and strong and the mind is quiet, the transformation of internal energies occurs. Our form of tai chi is specifically designed to improve health.

Taoist Tai Chi® arts are distinguished at the physical level by stretching, using a full range of motion and continuous turning of the waist and spine. The movements exercise the whole physiology, including tendons, joints, connective tissue and internal organs.

At the mental and spiritual level, they are a method of ‘taming the heart’ and developing an attitude of calm and compassion, both during practice and in daily life. The turning and stretching in each of the movements contributes to better balance and posture, increased strength and flexibility, and calmness and peace of mind. The movements are intended to return both body and mind to their original nature.

According to Taoist teachings, body and mind cannot be separated. Each step in the training is intended to help the mind return to stillness, clarity and wisdom, and the body to a balanced, relaxed and healthy state.

The foundation of this art is compassion, and the underlying charitable orientation is in keeping with the Taoist values of selflessness and service to others.

Inspiration is found in the example set by Tai Chi founder, Master Moy Lin Shin, who dedicated his life to helping others without seeking personal gain. For this reason, Fung Loy Kok Taoist Tai Chi®’s instructors are volunteers, and their branches are run by volunteers.
