Times Colonist nominated for citizenshi­p award

The Times Colonist is a finalist in the Victoria version of the 2016 National Philanthro­py Awards.

The newspaper is joined by Stantec and Maximus B.C. Health Inc. in the Corporate Citizenshi­p category, presented by the University of Victoria. The Times Colonist is being recognized for initiative­s such as its Christmas Fund and its book drive in support of literacy projects on Vancouver Island, as well as for helping over 150 charities and community groups annually through in-kind advertisin­g.

Stantec, an engineerin­g, architectu­ral and environmen­tal consulting firm, was nominated for charitable work that includes donating one per cent of annual profits, as well as supporting scholarshi­ps.

Among Maximus’s community contributi­ons is the creation of the annual UrbaCity Challenge fundraisin­g race in Victoria.

The philanthro­py awards, given annually to individual­s and organizati­ons that make a difference across Canada, will be presented Nov. 15 at the Empress Hotel. The event is being organized by the Associatio­n of Fundraisin­g Profession­als Vancouver Island.
