Popular folk trio Sweet Alibi will wind down its fall tour with a pair of concerts on Vancouver Island, including a don’t-miss appearance at the Chapel on Duncan’s Providence Farm.

Sweet Alibi, which features singers Jess Rae Ayre, Amber Rose and Michelle Anderson, kicks off its co-headlining tour with Ontario singer-songwriter Jadea Kelly on Oct. 19. The string of dates continues through November before coming to a close Nov. 12 in Victoria at the Upstairs Lounge in the Oak Bay Recreation Centre (the Duncan date happens Nov. 11 on Providence Farm, home to the annual Island Folk Festival and the Chapel, one of the best venues on the Island).

Sweet Alibi is touring in support of its third album, Walking In The Dark, which has drawn raves. Last week, the trio was nominated for vocal group of the year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Kelly earned a nomination as well, for contemporary singer of the year.

Tickets are $20 at Oak Bay Recreation Centre reception, Ivy’s Bookshop, or online at beaconridgeproductions.com.

Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Doors are at 6. Upstairs Lounge is located in the Oak Bay Recreation Centre, 1975 Bee St.

The Canadian Folk Music Awards — which announced its nominees last week — includes two Vancouver Island-area acts: The Kerplunks and Big Little Lions. The latter, a duo from the Comox Valley, is up for contemporary album of the year and vocal group of the year, while the Gabriola Island-based Kerplunks will compete for children’s album of the year. The awards will be presented Dec. 2-3 in Toronto.

Machine Gun Kelly has played Victoria plenty of times over the years, but familiarity has not bred contempt where the Houston rapper is concerned.

The popular underground rapper will perform at Distrikt Nightclub on Dec. 13. The show — assured of selling out — comes on the heels of Young Man, his new single with rapper Chief Keef. Kelly made the switch to acting this year, playing the recurring character of Wes on Cameron Crowe’s televised ode to the road, Roadies.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday for $40 at ticketweb.ca and the Strathcona Hotel (919 Douglas St.)

Another rap show of note is headed for Distrikt nightclub in the coming weeks.

Layzie Bone of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony is hitting the Douglas Street club Oct. 23 as part of his Perfect Timing tour. Opening acts include Mo Thugs, an offshoot of the Bone Thugs-N-Harmony family, and Victoria performers Dockside Green and Marshall A.

Tickets are $20 at Lyle’s Place, the Strathcona Hotel, and Ticketzone.com.

An in-depth look at the punk roots of Victoria is due for release via the new documentary Somewhere to Go: Punk Victoria.

The film, directed by Victoria native Paulina Ortlieb, chronicles the history of the punk scene in Greater Victoria, and includes footage of and interviews with some of the key local bands in the movement, including Nomeansno, Dayglo Abortions, Jerk Ward, the Neos and Pigment Vehicle, among others.

It’s the second comprehensive look at the city’s now-legendary punk scene. The first, a 2007 book and CD compendium titled All Your Ears Can Hear, tackled underground music in Victoria from 1978 to 1984.

The filmmakers have not announced an official release date for Somewhere to Go, but the trailer is available at the Facebook page of the same name.

Donovan Woods, who wowed audiences in February during his opening set for Matt Andersen at Farquhar Auditorium, is coming back to Victoria on Nov. 10 for a much-anticipated show at Lucky Bar (517 Yates St.).

The tour is to celebrate the release of They Are Going Away, his new EP. It’s the latest batch of music from Woods, following his Polaris Music Prize long-listed album Hard Settle, Ain’t Troubled, which garnered high praise this year.

Joey Landreth will open the show. Tickets are $12 at Lyle’s Place and ticketzone.com.
