Royal visit just one of Commonwealth services

Re: “Royals’ time has come and gone,” letter, Sept. 18. Canada is a fully paid-up member of the British Commonwealth, and we pay annual fees to the “company” (Commonwealth) every year as the U.K. used to pay fees to the European Union. We receive services from said “company,” and one of those is the Royal Family.

As for being parasitical, a parasite gives nothing back to the host, whereas this visit by Prince William and his wife Kate is bringing in tourists, money and the national and international media at all levels.

Let’s look in our own backyard for parasites, such as Conservative and Liberal MPs’ allocation expenses. Anthony Mathews Victoria
