UVic men lose, women win

The University of Victoria Vikes men’s soccer team went 1-1 on their Canada West tour of Alberta over the weekend. The University of Calgary Dinos (7-2) edged the Vikes 2-1 on Sunday. Dominic Russo scored the winner at 52 minutes. Earlier goals by Jorge Leon Gomez of Calgary and Dorian Colopisis of UVic (3-6) had the score deadlocked 1-1 at the half.

A header goal in extra time by Keevan Webb gave UVic a 1-0 victory over the Pronghorns (2-7-1) on Saturday in Lethbridge.

It’s a Lower Mainland trip this week for the Vikes as they play the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday in Langley and the Fraser Valley Cascades on Saturday in Abbotsford.

The UVic Vikes women’s soccer team (3-1-3) traveled more than 4,000 kilometres over the weekend to pick up four points. The scoreless draw in Edmonton against the unbeaten Pandas (3-0-2) on Friday, with Meghan Storie earning the clean sheet, was followed by a 3-0 victory over the winless Timberwolv­es (0-6) on Sunday in Prince George. Mia Gunter, Miranda Sakich and Kyra Teetzen scored for UVic.

The Vikes are back at Centennial Stadium this week to face the Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Friday and the UBC-Okanagan Heat on Saturday. Both games start at 5 p.m.
