Trudeau should have changed electoral system
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau argues that dropping electoral reform improves stability and reduces risk.
I argue that stability is a question of degree: how much is good, how much is too risky?
Stability of rule from king or dictator? Too much. Our current system? Consider that the 2011 and 2015 elections delivered 100 per cent power with 39 per cent voter support.
As with recent elections in the United Kingdom and the United States, both first past the post, our system allows a similar result for the successful demagogue of any party stripe.
Instead, proportional representation would deliver 100 per cent power only with real majority support, a bar only reached three times in Canadian federal election history.
If Trudeau’s goal was to keep 100 per cent of power out of the hands of people such as Kellie Leitch, he should have implemented PR. Keith Finnie Victoria
